Bobby Green

Bobby Green came to the Greenville Community Shelter on his most recent occasion on November 1, 2007. This was his third time being a resident in the program. It was on this particular stay in the shelter that Bobby made a commitment to himself to change his life situation.  Bobby began going to Pitt Community College to study heating, air conditioning and refrigeration.  It was during this time that Bobby applied for an opening in Transitional Housing. He was accepted to the program on February 2, 2008. While a resident in the Transitional Housing program Bobby established himself as a leader and positive influence to others in the program. He frequently helped others with homework for school and assisted with difficult situations involving individuals who sought help through Narcotics Anonymous. During his residency, Bobby was an integral part of the interview process to determine the sincerity and drive of candidates being considered for admission to the Transitional Housing program.

Bobby continued his transformation by studying hard and focusing on school. While attending Pitt Community College Bobby became a member of the Sigma Alpha Pi honor society; he was placed on the Dean’s List for the school; and he graduated with honors with a 3.5 Grade Point Average. He obtained his Associates Degree in May of 2010 in HVAC.

Today Bobby volunteers with the York Memorial AME Zion church as a Sunday school teacher for the young adult class. He is a member of the Trustee’s Board and a regular participant when his church serves dinner for residents of Greenville Community Shelters. In addition to church work, Bobby is employed with PAS in Washington, NC as an assembler of washer and dryer heads for Bosche appliances.

Because Bobby served in the military he was recently awarded permanent housing through VASH vouchers that were made available to qualifying veterans on July 2, 2010.  Bobby’s road to freedom from homelessness has been a long one but it’s one that I am sure he will tell you has been worth the wait. His contributions to the shelter are a great influence and example of hard work and determination for all of the residents.
